Orion

My bare legs free in the January darkness

I stood in the sky for an hour

To watch two planes cross Orion’s belt

And I heard nothing

And I felt warm.

I floated back in later air

To hear the lull of highway waves

Sing me to sleep

But it broke with the echo cry

Of a mourning dove, or maybe a child

And the earth seemed to shudder

As my feet touched her hair.
