“It is so hard to sleep alone,”
whispers the girl to her teddy bear,
clutched fiercely to her chest.
She has always slept alone
But tonight she cannot sleep
because there is no body next to hers,
no back to curl up to
no hand to rest upon her shoulder
no sound of steady breathing beside her.
She lays awake endlessly,
never moving, hardly breathing
motionless tears burning behind her eyelids.
Eventually she will sleep,
And her teddy bear will tumble to the floor,
And she will awake more cold and alone than before.
